How To Measure Your Roof & Save Yourself Thousands
Measuring a Roof
At Norris Roofing and Sheet Metal, we use our own proprietary software to arrive at a detailed
quote which includes all cuts (assuming the quote is for vertical panel roofing), panel layout,
all appropriate trim pieces, panel screws, roof vents---completely everything you will require
for the job…provided we are furnished with the correct information.
Now, we don't need a detailed architectural drawing (if you do happen to have one that’s great
but double check its accuracy for the reasons described above) and it does not have to be to
scale so don’t worry about that.
Here’s how you prepare what we need to do a detailed quote for you
Step 1
Roughly draw out your roof on a piece of paper. Remember, it doesn’t have to be to scale or
look pretty. It does have to contain all the straight lines of your roof and an accurate
measurement of those lines.
For example, what we need on the picture of the roof below are measurements of all the
lines.
Draw in any penetrations such as a fireplace, skylights, pluming boots, lengths of the valleys,
length of the ridges, It is very important that the measurements from the bottom edge of the
roof to the peak is measured to the whole inch.
Step 2
We need to know the roof pitch or the slope of the roof. We can keep it simple is it walkable
or not.
Step 3
Now, phone 877-844-5450 or e-mail it to jerry@norrisroofingandsheetmetal.com

Step 1
Make a slat board base on top of the shingles. You will need to lay some 1-by-3 inch pine boards
lengthwise every 3 foot on your roof. Move from bottom to top. Attach them to your roof with 3-inch
wood screws in each corner.
Step 2
Install your metal edging around the bottom edge of your roof. Use 8d nails every 4 to 6 inches to
nail it to the roof.
Step 3
Metal roofing sheets have to be installed one at a time. Place a sheet from top to bottom on a
section of the roof. Use 1-1/2 inch metal wood screws to attach the metal sheets to the wood slat
board base.
Step 4
Place screws on each side spaced every 9 inches apart. On your first metal sheet only, you will
need to put screws in the center as well. Your next sheet will overlap your first sheet and that
pattern will continue each time you install a new metal sheet.
Step 5
Your metal rake will go along the roof's edges all the way to the top ridge. Install with 1- 1/2-inch
metal wood screws at a distance of every two to three feet.( For added wind protection you may
place a few in the face of metal into the facial board.
Step 6
The only part of your metal roof not completely attached will be the bottoms of the metal sheets. You
can attach those to the roof using 1-1/2-inch metal wood screws at a distance of every 9 inches.
Step 7
The closures will be self-adhesive on one side so you can just push them into the openings and they
will self seal. This will prevent animals and water from getting into openings.
